news What is Cabin Fever?

"Cabin Fever" is a term for a claustrophobic reaction that takes place when a person or group of people are isolated in a small space, with nothing to do for an extended period of time.

Sound familiar? Here are some winter boredom busters to inspire you. Get out of the house, learn something new, keep the kids busy on a snowy day, start a hobby or just have fun!

There's no doubt about it, a good wholesome change of environment does the body, mind and soul a lot of good. Just the thought of visiting somewhere new or doing something different, almost instanly refreshes!

Get Out of the House

Go to a Museum

Fashion, Textile and Craft exhibits are always an appealing and inspiring way to spend an afternoon. Three favorites include:

Museum of Fine Art, Boston has an extensive Textile and Fashion Collection always worth exploring.

Peabody Essex Museum, Salem a world class museum on the North Shore of Massachusetts.

The N.E. Quilt Museum, Lowell is a local gem well worth a visit.

Go to the Library

The public library in your city or town is a wonderful place to visit on a cold winter day. Some favorite library activities include:

Research a favorite period in history and learn about the culture, fashion and jewelry of that period.

Gather books on the decorative arts of different cultures and collect images of patterns, motifs and colors that you like.

Check-out books on jewelry making techniques and teach yourself something new.

Make Paper Beads

Paper beads are colorful, lightweight and eco-friendly.

Kids love selecting the paper, carefully rolling the beads and watching someone seal the beads for a shiny and sturdy finish. This project is fun for adults too. Recycle those glossy holiday catalogs by creating wonderful one-of-a-kind paper beads. Visit www.INSTRUCTABLES.com for detailed instructions.
