Zodiac Gemstones are sometimes referred to as Astral Gemstones. According to ancient beliefs, the healing powers attributed to gemstones were linked to astral signs (signs of the zodiac). Ancient Astrologers believed that wearing or carrying the stones associated with the consellation one was born under strengthened life's fortune and increased astral influence.

Modern Birthstones were influenced by this history. In 1912 the American National Retail Jewler's Association adopted a so-called list of "accepted" Traditional Birthstones. This list grew out of centuries of history and the influence of many cultures and beliefs.
